Pioneering Lignin-based Solutions with NBank's Support

Lignin is everywhere in nature. This natural polymer, which gives plants their strength and resilience, has long been discarded as waste. For decades, this valuable, biodegradable material has been overlooked, often treated as a byproduct of industrial processes. Lignopure is changing that by transforming lignin into sustainable ingredients for the cosmetics industry and beyond.

Bringing a natural alternative to synthetic ingredients into mainstream production requires more than just an idea. It takes scientific expertise, advanced technology, and the right partners to scale up. That’s where Investitions- und Förderbank Niedersachsen – NBank has stepped in to support Lignopure’s journey.

Turning a Byproduct into a Solution

Traditionally, lignin is separated from plant fibers during biorefinery processes but remains underutilized. Lignopure recognized its potential — not as waste, but as a high-value, sustainable ingredient.

Co-founder Joana Gil, who has a strong background in sustainable materials research, explains: “The processing of lignin is normally a complex process, but our technology combines these many steps into a leaner, environmentally friendly process.”

By refining lignin into functional powders, Lignopure is offering industries a natural, biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based ingredients. The cosmetics sector, increasingly focused on eco-conscious formulations, is already adopting this innovation.

A significant step in Lignopure’s journey was the launch of Europe’s first lignin-processing production plant in Buxtehude. This facility allowed the company to introduce its first product line, proving that lignin-based ingredients can be produced at an industrial scale. With production underway, the next challenge was expanding operations and attracting strategic partners. At this stage, NBank became a vital partner, offering not only financial support but also access to an extensive industry network. “Through NBank, we make valuable contacts in Lower Saxony and can attract new investors and cooperation partners,” says Gil. Beyond funding, NBank is helping Lignopure build relationships with key stakeholders, accelerating its growth and impact in sustainable material development.

Recognition and Industry Spotlight

Lignopure’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. After winning the DurchSTARTer-Preis 2025 in the Scale-Up category, NBank featured the company in its funding report press release, highlighting its success story. The report included a video filmed at the Buxtehude production plant, showcasing the team’s work and the potential of lignin-based solutions. This recognition has further solidified Lignopure’s position as a key player in the circular economy.

With the backing of NBank and a clear vision for the future, Lignopure is proving that waste can become value, and that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.
